How to Crochet Puff Stitch Baby Hat
Crochet Puff Baby Hat Pattern by Crochet For You
Do you remember the Cluster V Stitch Baby Hat I made? In that tutorial I also explained how to design a hat with your favorite stitch. Click here to see the free pattern and tutorial. I think it is useful for all beginners to crochet and yes, today we are going to crochet another baby hat with a beautiful stitch pattern.
This baby hat pattern crocheted with another stitch pattern. Puff stitch is one of my favorite stitches and I thought to use the same method I used for a cluster baby hat.

When selecting a crochet stitch pattern, I always use my Crochet Stitch Dictionary: 200 Essential Stitches with step by step photos by Sarah Hazell book for my creation. Do you use crochet stitch dictionary for inspirations?
This hat crocheted from top to down and can be adjusted to any size.
Click here and see how to select a stitch pattern and how to design a hat in any size using your favorite stitch pattern.
I followed my Hat Sizing Guide to get the right size.
First, you need to crochet the crown part. The flat circular top of the hat is made by increasing on each round until you reach the required diameter for the size you are crocheting.
Then you will stop increasing and ready to add the stitch pattern we select for the hat.

First, you need to make a magic ring. Or crochet chains 5 or 6 and slip stitch to the first chain to make a ring. I started the first round with 8 hdc because the puff stitch works multiple of 2 in rounds.
Round 1: ch 1 (does not count as a st), 8 hdc into the ring, sl st to first hdc. (8 sts)
Round 2: ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to the first hdc. (16 sts)
Round 3: ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next stitch; repeat to around, sl st to the first hdc. (24 sts)
Round 4: ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 hdc in first st, *hdc in each of next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st; repeat to around, sl st to the first hdc. (32 sts)
At this point the crown completed for 6-12 size = 5″ diameter of my flat circle.
- For other sizes: follow the hat sizing guide chart on How to Crochet Hat in Any Size to make this hat in any size.
- After you get the closest number to the size of the crown width you want. Continue the body part until you reach the hat height you need.

Round 8: sk first puff st, sl st to the next ch-sp, ch 1 (beg ch does not count as stitch), puff st in same ch-sp, *ch 1, sk next puff st, puff st in next ch-sp; repeat * to around, last ch 1 sl st to the puff st. (16 puff sts)
