Crochet Gingerbread Hat Free Pattern
Crochet this adorable Gingerbread hat for upcoming holiday season! The pattern comes in child size but can be adjusted to any size. This is a basic hat pattern crocheted with sc and hdc stitches, adding buttons eyes and sweet smiling face with icing line you will have a cute gingerbread man face on the hat.

Finished size: (Child) 17 – 18″ circumference / 8.5″ height
Materials:
Yarn: 4-Medium / Worsted / 100% Acrylic / Approx: 200 yards
(I used)
– Ice Yarn Favorite (100% Acrylic; 229 yards [210 meters] / 100g)
– 50 yards of White (C1), 150 yards of Gold (C2)
– US I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
– US H/8, 5mm crochet hook (for cheeks)
– Small amount of Red yarn (for cheeks)
– 2 buttons (black, size 10mm), white thread and needle for sewing buttons
– Tapestry needle for weaving ends
– Scissors
Gauge: 14 hdc x 10 rows = 4″ with US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
Abbreviations (US Term)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- st(s) – stitch(s)
- BL – back loop
- hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together
- *to – repeat * to the instructions.
- beg – beginning
- (C1) – Color 1
- (C2) – Color 2
- (C3) – Color 3
Notes:
- Beg ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- This beanie works from the bottom up.
- Can be adjusted to any size. Crochet multiple of 6 rows for the band part to get your desired circumference.
Crochet Gingerbread Hat Pattern
Ribbed band
Leaving about 6” long yarn tail, crochet ch 8.
Row 1: with (C1) sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each st across, turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, sc in BL of each of next 5 st, sc in last st, turn. (7 sts)
Row 3 to 60: repeat row 2. Do not cut the yarn.
(Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle, place two short sides together and sew with the tapestry needle)
Body of the hat (Work on the long side of the band)
Round 1: with (C1) ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, join with sl st in first st. (60 sts total)
Fasten off and cut the yarn.
Round 2: with (C2) ch 1, hdc in each st around, join with sl st in first st. (60 sts)
Round 3 to 12: repeat round 2
Round 13: ch 1, hdc in first st and next 3 sts, *hdc2tog in next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 4 st; repeat * from around, sl st to the first st. (50 sts)
Round 14: ch 1, hdc in first st and next 2 sts, *hdc2tog in next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 3 st; repeat * from around, sl st to the first st. (40 sts)
Do not cut the yarn, continue next rounds after adding icing line.
Icing line
With (C1), surface slip stitch like a wavy line between 12 and 13 rounds of the mittens. Fasten off and weave the end.

Round 15: ch 1, hdc in first st and next st, *hdc2tog in next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 st; repeat * from around, sl st to the first st. (30 sts)
Round 16: ch 1, hdc in first st, *hdc2tog in next 2 sts, hdc in next st; repeat * from around, sl st to the first st. (20 sts)
Round 17: ch 1, hdc2tog in first 2 sts, *hdc2tog in next 2 sts; repeat * from around, sl st to the first st. (10 sts)
Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving about 10” long yarn tail.
Finishing (Close top of the hat)
Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and weave through spaces between stitches in the last round. Pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the hat with a few more stitches. Lastly, attach pom-pom. (I made a pompom with the same white yarn used for the hat).
Facial Features
Cheeks (make 2)
With red yarn and US H/8, 5mm crochet hook, make an adjustable ring, 8 hdc into the ring, join with sl st in first st.
Fasten off and leave about 10″ long yarn tail for attaching to the hat.
Using sewing needles and with white thread, sew buttons on the round 9, about 1.5 stitches apart.
With (C1), surface slip stitch mouth line between 5 and 6 rounds of the hat. Sew 2 cheeks at the end of the mouth lines.
