I’m loving the lightweight and autumn colors!
I started making this rectangle shawl last March to finish it in spring and summertime. Unfortunately I had some health issues, so finally it’s here at least the end of the summer and before the Autumn. I’m so excited because now I think this Small Crochet Motif Shawl with the color of the yarn I select is perfect for Fall.

– Start to join from the second motif. While working round 2 get ready for the join. (Find more info below)
– Finally weave all the ends and work simple border.
I used variegated yarns to crochet this shawl, but I break the yarns and change the color where I want in the shawl. So you can combine any color when you want.
Joining motifs
- Using these motif you can make any size shawl.
- To make this shawl I used total 192 Motifs. (8 motifs in width and 24 motifs in height)
- The first row of 8 only needs one side joining. From the second row, you will need to join motif in 2 sides and sometimes 3 sides. You will find the instructions + video tutorial for these joining parts below.
Small Crochet Motif Pattern
Make the first motif with all rounds (1 to 2) and fasten off.
Make an adjustable ring
Round 1: ch 3 (count as dc), 4 dc into the ring, [ch 5, 5 dc into the ring] 3 times, ch 5, join with sl st in beg ch 3 top. Turn the work.
Round 2: ch 3 (count as dc), dc in ch-5 space, ch 6, (2 dc, ch 8, 2 dc, ch 6, 2 dc) in same ch space, [2 dc, ch 6, 2 dc, ch 8, 2 dc, 6 ch, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space] 3 times, sl st in beg ch 3 top.
Fasten off and cut the yarn.
Joining motifs
When you’re working on other motif after the first one, follow the instructions below for joining.
To make this shawl I joined 8 motifs in width, 24 motifs in height.
The first row of 8 only needs one side joining.
One side joining
Follow the instructions 1 to 7 below for joining, crochet the rest of the motif pattern in round 2 and fasten off.
Two sides joining
Follow the instructions 1 to 7 below for joining, repeat 4 to 7 one time again and crochet the rest of the motif pattern in round 2 and fasten off.
Three sides joining
Follow the instructions 1 to 7 below for joining, repeat 4 to 7 two times again and crochet the rest of the motif pattern in round 2 and fasten off.
Joining Instructions
- Follow the round 1 of the motif pattern above and start to join in round 2.
- Ch 3 (count as dc), dc in ch-5 space, ch 6, 2 dc in same ch-5 space.
- Ch 4 first, drop the loop off from the hook, insert the hook in one of the corner ch-8 space of the previous square we crocheted and finished, pick up the loop and pull through the space, ch 4, 2 dc in same space of the working motif.
- Ch 3, drop the loop off from the hook, insert the hook in next ch-6 space of the motif we are joining, pick up the loop and pull through the space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space of the working motif.
- 2 dc in next ch-5 space (corner) of the working motif.
- Ch 3, drop the loop off from the hook, insert the hook in next ch-6 space of the motif we are joining, pick up the loop and pull through the space, ch 3, 2 dc in same space of the working motif.
- Ch 4, drop the loop off from the hook, insert the hook in next ch-8 space of the motif we are joining, pick up the loop and pull through the space, ch 4, 2 dc in same space of the working motif.
Once you joining motifs, you may probably have a bunch of crochet yarn ends to weave in. In the video tutorial you can see how I weave the yarn ends. It was my easy way to do it.
Simple Edging
Join the yarn one of the ch-8 space of the motif placed in the corner of the shawl.
Row 1: ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-8 space, ch 3, sl st to same space (image 1 below), *[ch 8, sl st to next ch-6 space] 2 times, ch 8, sl st to ch-8 space, ch 3, 1dc in same space, 1 dc in next ch-8 space, ch 3. sl st to same space (image 2 below), repeat * from around. Fasten off and weave the end.
