Hi everyone! Happy Tuesday and welcome to the blog. 🙂 Do you remember Ocean Shades Beanie pattern for 2-5 yrs from last January? Because I had a fan request here is an adult version of the Ocean Shades Hat. 🙂

The Ocean Shades Pompom Hat uses the same stitch, textures and color combinations of the Ocean Shades Baby Beanie. It was a bit challenging to me do it from top to down so I made this hat bottom up. And added faux fur pompom last.

More about the pattern

As the name of this pattern is Ocean Shades, you need three colors of blue shades or 3 matching colors to your choice. Do not forget to select 3 colors to get the same look of this pattern. ?

Skil level: Intermediate

Finished size: (adult)

• Hat height = 9.5”
• Hat circumference = 19”-20”

Materials

#4-Medium / Worsted  in 3 colors (Approx: 195 total yards)

I used

• Red Heart Soft White (approx: 55 yards)/ Turquoise (approx: 65 yards)/ Navy (approx: 75 yards) (Amazon affiliate)
• Faux Fur Pom Pom (Amazon affiliate)
• I-9 / 5.5mm crochet hook
• Tapestry needle for weaving ends.

Gauge: 13 hdc x 9 rows = 4″ with I-9 / 5.5mm crochet hook.

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• sl st = slip stitch
• sc = single stitch
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet
• st = stitch
• sk = skip
• beg = beginning
• BL = Back Loop
• (C1) = color 1 (dark blue)
• (C2) = color 2 (light blue)
• (C3) = color3 (white)
• *to = repeat * to the instructions.

Special stitches

• Shell-1 = ch 2, 3 hdc in next st.
• Shell-2 = ch 3, 3 dc in indicated (chain space)
• Shell-3 = ch 2, 3 hdc in indicated (chain space)
• Shell-4 = ch 2, 2 hdc in indicated (chain space)
• Shell-5 = ch 2, hdc in indicated (chain space)

Notes

• Fasten off when changing colors for a nicer finish for the inside of the hat. Or you can carry each yarn when it needs if you like, because of the weaving ends is lots of work.
• When it says sl st to (chain space), it’s the bolded one in the previous round. Not the ch 2 with shell 1, 3, 4 and 5.
• This hat can be adjusted to any size.
• And the works from bottom up.
• Crochet multiple of 5 rows for the band part to get your desired circumference.

Ocean Shades Pompom Hat Pattern

Leaving 6” long tail of the yarn, with the I-9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Band

Ch 8,

Row 1: sc in second ch from the hook, sc in each st across, turn. (7 sts)

Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, sc in BL of each of next 5 sts, sc in last st, turn. (7 sts)

Row 3 to 75: repeat row 2.

Insert the yarn tail through the tapestry needle, place two short sides together and sew.

Body of the hat (Work in long side of the band)

Round 1: with the same color (C1), ch 1(does not count as st), sc in each st around the long side of the band, sl st to the first st. (75 sc total)

Round 2: join (C2), ch 1(does not count as st), sc in first st and each st around, sl st to the first st. (75 sc total)

Round 3: join (C3), *shell-1(see special stitches), ch 2(chain space), sk next 3 sts, sl st to the next st; repeat * to around. (15 shell-1)

Round 4: join (C1) at any (chain space) in previous round, *shell-2(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell-1 in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-2 worked. (15 shell-2)

Round 5: join (C2) at beg ch 3 top of the shell-2 in previous round, ch 1 (does not count as st), hdc in same st, sk next dc of the shell-2, hdc in each of next 2 dc of the shell-2, *2 dc in (chain space), hdc in ch 3 top of the next shell-2 in previous round, sk next dc and hdc in each of next 2 dc of the shell-2; repeat * to around, sl st to the first hdc. (75 sts total)

Round 6: join (C1) with ch 1(does not count as st), hdc in first st and each st around, sl st to the first st. (75 sts total)

Round 7: repeat round 3.

Round 8: repeat round 4.

Round 9: repeat round 5.

Round 10: repeat round 6.

Round 11: repeat round 3.

Round 12: join (C2) at any (chain space), *shell-3(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-3 worked. (15 shell-3)

Round 13: with the same color, sl st until next (chain space), *shell-3(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-3 worked. (15 shell-3)

Round 14: repeat round 12 with (C3).

Round 15: repeat round 12 with (C2).

Round 16: repeat round 13 with (C2).

Round 17: repeat round 12 with (C3).

Round 18: with same color, sl st until next (chain space), *shell-4(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-4 worked. (15 shell-4)

Round 19: join (C2) at any (chain space), *shell-4(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-4 worked. (15 shell-4).

Round 20: repeat round 19 with (C3).

Round 21: repeat round 18 with (C3).

Round 22: join (C2) at any (chain space), *shell-5(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-5 worked. (15 shell-5).

Round 23: with same color, sl st to until next (chain space), *shell-5(see special stitches) in same space, ch 2(chain space), sk next shell in previous round, sl st to the next (chain space) in previous round; repeat * to around, after crocheting last ch 2(chain space) in repeat section, sl st to the (chain space) in the previous round that first shell-5 worked. (15 shell-5)

Round 24: with the same color, sl st until next chain space, 2 sc in same space, *sk next shell-5 in the previous round, 2 sc in next (chain space); repeat * to around, sl st to the first st. (30 sts)

Round 25: ch 1(does not count as st), sc in first st, *sk next st, sc in next st; repeat * to around, sl st to the first st. (15 sts) Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving 10-12” tail.

Finishing

Close top of the hat.

Turn inside out first. Insert the yarn through the tapestry needle and weave through space between sc sts in round 25. Pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the hat with few more stitches.  Add pom-pom lastly, if you like.
